Assembly's dance in Cambridge last night was great fun, and also very strange for me. The contradance world used to be such a huge part of my life, but this was the first dance I'd played or attended in well over a year, and the whole scene seems so alien to me now.
Shahzad Ismaily sat in with us on bass and drums, which very seriously spiked the sound.
Sam has a habit of recording us on stage, using a very very bad tape player with a crappy built in microphone--and the results are incredible. This is how I want this music to sound--a massive, completely un-deconstructable wall of sound. It's trance music, that's the whole point. Here's a clip from last night, of a tune by Kari Reiman (formerly of the great Finnish folk-rock group, Vartinna).
