alex ross's nordic idea

I finally got around to reading Alex Ross's Björk profile in the New Yorker. It is, of course, excellent (Ross pretty much always is). But I do cringe every time he mentions "the Nordic idea." He says near the beginning of the piece that it's impossible to define, but continues to use it throughout the article ("The minor-key radiance of 'Vökuró' was sufficient to anchor the album in the Nordic idea.") in ways that I find totally unconvincing.

Still, it's probably the best thing that's been written about Björk.

Ross has just posted a useful Fall New Music Preview (mostly New York-based) on his blog. He also continues to praise my friend Nico Muhly, which makes me happy.
